How to Get to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is an amazing and breathtaking destination so much so that it has become one of the new 7 Wonders of the World.  However it’s not as a simple as taking a flight and arriving there. There are a couple of ways to get to Machu Picchu and see this beautiful Inca citadel.

Most people opt for the classic and easiest way.  You can take a train from either the Poroy station or the Ollantaytambo station. Poroy is about a 25 minute car ride from Cusco while Ollantaytambo is around 2 hours.  This train takes you to the Aguas Calientes which is a lively and unique village at the base of Machu Picchu. From there you can take a bus or hike up into the entrance of Machu Picchu. It is recommended to purchase the tickets for the train and Machu Picchu well ahead of time before you go as they are limited in the amount of people that can enter.

Aguas Calientes is a fun village with many restaurants and hostels.  The town is named after hot springs and you can go and enjoy the hot springs there after your visit to Machu Picchu.

The train from Poroy is 3 hours and 20 minutes and the train from Ollantaytambo is 1 hour and 50 minutes.

The dream and highlight for any skilled backpacker is the Inca Trail.  There are limited permits available so it is recommended to plan with at least 6 months in advance.  This is a 4 day hike through the Sacred Valley and on the last day be prepared to get up at 3:00 am so you can catch the breathless sunrise on top of Machu Picchu – a cherry on top of a perfect cake!  You will pass by many Inca ruins and learn about the current Andean people and their Incan ancestors. For anyone that has any interest in backpacking, adventures or learning this will be an unforgettable journey and adventure.

The hike is 4 days and 3 nights and 26 miles.

The sacred valley offers some of the most incredible scenery in all of planet earth. You will definitely want to brush up on your photography skills and get ready to enjoy one of the most amazing places on planet earth!

It is recommended to make your travel preparations well in advance as permits and tickets go fast.  The best time to go is in July or August as it typically has the least cloud cover and rain.
